In his newest book Spiritual Warfare and the Discernment of Spirits Dan has taken the giant teaching of St. Ignatius Spiritual Exercises, Discernment of Spirits and has made it accessible to the average laymen. Thank you Mr. Burke for doing so! Why read this book? Simply because, as Dan mentions, it is asked of us in Holy Scripture - to test. Discernment: Reading the Signs of Daily Life is an excellent guide compiled from the writings and course materials of Henri Nouwen. In his words: "Discernment is a spiritual understanding and an experiential knowledge of how God is active in daily life that is acquired through disciplined spiritual practice/5. Question: "How can I increase my spiritual discernment?" Answer: Discernment is defined as “the quality of being able to grasp and comprehend what is obscure; an act of perceiving something; a power to see what is not evident to the average mind.” The definition also stresses accuracy, as in “the ability to see the truth.” Spiritual discernment is the ability to tell . In Sanskrit, spiritual discernment is called viveka and is said to be the “crowning wisdom” on the spiritual path, allowing us to discover what is real vs. unreal. Indian sage Patanjali believed that it was spiritual discernment that helped us to achieve a “luminous state,” also known as spiritual illumination or wholeness.
